Investing in Girls and Women

The Clinton Global Initiative, meeting in New York City, has issued the following press release:
New York, NY – Millions of girls and women will have access to improved health care, better education, and increased economic opportunity because of commitments made today at the Fifth Annual Meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which brings together leaders from across sectors of society to identify solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Women perform 66 percent of the world’s work, and produce 50 percent of the food, yet earn only 10 percent of the income and own 1 percent of the property,” President Bill Clinton said. “Whether the issue is improving education in the developing world, or fighting global climate change, or addressing nearly any other challenge we face, empowering women is a critical part of the equation.”
Reports show that when women and girls are empowered, entire regions see measurable results. This is especially true for economic empowerment – for example, a woman is likely to reinvest about 90 percent of her earnings into her family’s well-being, compared with 35 percent for a man. Increases in access to education among girls accounted for a decline of 43 percent in the malnutrition rates between 1970 and 1995. Investing in women’s health, especially reproductive health, not only saves the lives of half a million mothers, but also unleashes an estimated $15 billion in productivity each year….
This year, the CGI Annual Meeting will feature a variety of special programming related to girls and women. Today, the plenary session “Investing in Girls and Women,” moderated by Diane Sawyer, featured Edna Adan, director and founder of the Edna Adan Maternity and Teaching Hospital; Lloyd C. Blankfein, chairman and CEO of The Goldman Sachs Group; Zainab Salbi, founder and CEO of Women for Women International; Rex Tillerson, Chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil, Melanne Verveer, ambassador-at-large for global women’s issues at the U.S. Department of State; and Robert B. Zoellick, President of The World Bank Group

Meet your Meat

Eid Mubarak! (May you enjoy a blessed festival!)

Eid is the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.
This is a time of great celebration with family and friends--and lots of food! Many families will slaughter sheep as part of this ritual celebration.

And so, just days before Eid I went to pick out my first sheep for slaughter. Everyone shared with me some advice along the way...

First. The market. So many choices.
Best advice: Pick the fat one.

Second. Bring sheep home.
Best advice: Do not put sheep in your car. They poop. Hire sheep taxi.

Third. Slaughter.
Best advice: Don't watch. No photos.

Fourth. Celebration meal.
Best advice: Enjoy. It's quite delicious!

Going to the chapel...

Somali wedding engagement party!

"Engagement time is when two people come together and are married informally, meaning that they aren’t living with each other yet. The engagement in any case is always arranged between the girl’s parents or guardians because it’s part of the religion. At that time the family of the groom give presents that represents many thanks for helping their son find a daughter. Next, the families of both the groom and bride have a small party with family members and friends even though it may be only a few people."

Ramadan

21 August--19 September 2009
(9th month of the Islamic Calendar)

  • Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection and worship
  • It is a month-long fast (dawn to sunset) reinforcing patience, modesty and spirituality for all practicing Muslims.
  • The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm.
  • In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Qur'an over the course of the month
  • Eid ul-Fitr is the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, symbolizing the breaking of the fasting period.

News Update

Demonstrations in Hargeisa, Somaliland today. 2 dead. Several wounded, including a woman seven months pregnant who was shot in the chest. 2 came to Edna Hospital for treatment. Both car and tire fires in city center, with some small arms action.

Confrontation spurred between local activists and police/army regarding recent disputes with the current President. Here is a brief summary:
  • Presidential elections are set for the end of December
  • President Dahir Riyale Kahin, who has been in power since 2002, has now become "unpopular" and the people would like to see him no longer in power.
  • Feeling threatened, the President has continued to postpone elections to retain his power.
  • Parliment met this past week to vote on an impeachment of the President.
  • The Presdient locked the Parliment building this week as a result of the impeachment discussions.
  • Today the Parliment was reopened, however only non-opposition members were allowed in (19/70).
  • Riots broke out as a result.
There is increased security at the hospital. A city-wide curfew has been instituted. As foreigners, we will not be able to leave the compound. There is a 2 step evacuation plane in place: first with a relocation within Somaliland, and one out-of-the country.

We are safe. And now we will wait.

What Clan are your Camels from?

Bumps. Dust. And Camels.

Boorama, Somalia.
~55km from Hargeisa.
2 hour drive in 4x4 vehicle. 80km/hr.

This clan of camels (~20) belongs to Somaliland's Minister of Health.
Each camel is valued at ~$500 (USD). They are considered "walking cash."

Somaliland is home to 1/5 of the world's camel population.
2000 camels are exported to Egypt each month.
Both their milk and meat is considered "healing."

We were invited to stop and rest at the Minister's "country home"
and sample some fresh camel milk.

Wonder Woman

Edna Adan Ismail.

An amazing woman who works tirelessly for the good of her people and support of women worldwide.

Her life is filled with beautiful and trying adventures and accomplishments. Some of the most noted include:
  • First lady of Somalia (1967-9) and of Somaliland (1993-2002)
  • WHO regional nursing manager 1986, 1991-1997
  • Director and founder of the first teaching maternity hospital in the country with both nursing and midwifery programs
  • Foreign Minister of Somaliland (2003-2006)
I am deeply honored to be here working with her and learning from her.

Today I had the great pleasure of sharing her 72nd birthday with her.
Happy Birthday, Edna.
